After a day riding, a good night's sleep makes all the difference. The trick isn't buying the warmest sleeping bag you can find – it's finding one that packs small enough for the bike while still keeping you comfortable if the temperature drops overnight.
Don't Buy for the Daytime Temperature
Even if it's 25°C when you arrive, overnight temperatures at UK festivals can easily fall into single figures. A bag with a comfort rating around 5°C is usually a sensible choice for summer camping.
Synthetic vs Down
For most UK riders, synthetic insulation is often the better choice. It keeps insulating if it gets damp from condensation or rain and is generally easier to care for. Down wins on weight and pack size but needs to stay dry to perform at its best.
Pack Size Is King
On a motorcycle, a sleeping bag that's slightly heavier but compresses into a much smaller package is often the better option. Look for models supplied with a compression sack to make the most of your luggage space.
Don't forget that your sleeping bag is only half the equation. A good insulated sleeping mat makes a huge difference to warmth and comfort because most heat is lost through the ground. If you're only investing in one upgrade, improving your mat often has a bigger impact than buying a warmer sleeping bag.
